Regarding the lawsuit in California, most of the alleged violations only pertain to California labor law. In that state, all expenses incurred by an employee in the course of their duties must be paid, such as auto expenses, phone use etc. A far as unpaid overtime, we are told in the information provided by the company that we are exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act as "Retail Sales". Since the repeal of the 13(a)(2) exemption The only exemption involving "Retail Sales" is the 7(i) exemption, Commissioned Employee of a Retail or Service Establishment" . "Establishment" refers to a "fixed" location and requires that 50% of an "establishments" sales be made within the state that it is located in, that it not be involved in the manufacturing process, be open to the general consuming public selling everyday goods and services to the general public at the tail end of the distribution cycle. The exact name of the exemption, and it's identifying symbol must be listed in the permanent payroll record (a requirement of federal law). I find it amazing that 59% of the company's sales are made in such a small state, more than all the other states combined. Our previous employer claimed we were exempt from overtime, yet gave no resistance to settlement when a suit was filed. Just my thoughts!

The amazing thing is that so many people worked for them. It seems like half the people I have worked with over the years worked for CI at one point-and most claim those the Glory Days.

But yeah, Assembly Line Portraits does seem to attract more than it's share of old crones-and old codgers as well.

Absolutely hilarios. This is the way it really was. Also one thing they made you shoot 6 days a week in the afternoons and evenings. Your mornings were to pack and go to the next location which could be two whole states away at any given day. They had terrible coverage and very hard to follow reimbursement directions. Not to mention the desire for photog's to always be wearing suit and tie while loading in and out of the location even if it was 110 deg SUN.
One other problem was there were Regional Managers who had their wives critique the photos for consistency, talk about nepotistic. Those were awful times. Busy but awful. Then the company started to have problems with the kid photog's not following rules so they had punitive reinforcement enabled for ALL photographers! The positive environment went down hill fast. Also many of the new sales people left due to all the oldies being wicked mean crones. Church Impressions, wicked inhumane meanness is all it was.

I can see why you want to get into artistic photography. Getting people to cooperate is not easy. I know I am not an easy person to shoot (just ask my normal photographer, my husband). I always look pissed off in pictures unless he can actually make me laugh.

Shooting objects is no doubt easier. You just have to get angels and lighting correct. No need to worry about blinking or fidgeting (my baby brother looks like he is flashing gang signs in ALL of my wedding pictures).

I wish you the best of luck in your new venture!

I saw a post on your site about Warren and Ramsey, so I wanted to bring to the table my own observations, having written two books on Warren. I see that your website is about freedom. Rick Warren's compulsory tithing covenants is the opposite of freedom in Christ, rather puts Christians back under the bondage of the law. The Apostle Paul twice condemned the Judaizers for doing this. So what would he say to Rick Warren?

Rick Warren Exposes His Congregation to the False Financial Teaching of Robert Morris
http://fbcjaxwatchdog.blogspot.com/2011/09/rick-warren-exposes-his-congregation-to.html

Subject: "Pharisees" Rick Warren

I am in staggered disbelief that Rick Warren would call those who oppose and expose him "Pharisees" because it is the Pharisees who tried to put Christians back under the bondage of the law. Paul twice eternally damned them in Galatians for this practice. But putting Christians back under the law is precisely what Rick Warren is doing with his compulsory covenants he enforces with his members, such as tithing covenants. And both Jesus Christ and the Apostle James warned us to not swear such oaths. But there are four covenants members must sign in Warren's church and his propaganda. Furthermore, Warren calls these good Bereans "Enemies of the 21st Century" and "Sanballats from Hell." So Warren is not just twice dead, but four times dead. So imagine what Jesus Christ would say to Rick Warren as well as The Apostle Paul and James would say to Rick Warren? I can tell you: "And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." Matthew 7:23
